Munich Pride: July 8 - 16, 2017
Welcome in Munich!
Munich is the city of the Oktoberfest, the home of the soccer club FC Bayern Munich, and of the automobile company BMW as well. But Munich has much more to offer - particularly for gays and lesbians.
The state capital of Bavaria is a liberal metropolis, in which lesbians and gays are a natural part of the society. There are numerous bars, restaurants and shops, but also a wide range of non-commercial groups and associations - there is something for every taste.
In 1997 the international gay and lesbian choir festival was celebrated in Munich, and in 2004 the EuroGames took place here for the first time.
Truly unique was Munich's city government from May 1996 till April 2014: The Social Democrats, the Green Party and the gay & lesbian party "Rosa Liste" formed a coalition together. The city government changed in May 2014, but "Rosa Liste" is still a part of the city council.
Munich Pride =
Christopher Street Day (CSD) München
The very first Munich Pride (CSD) took place at June 28, in 1980 and we are celebrating the CSD this year for the 36th time - in the meantime with over 200,000 people taking part!
Since the year 2000, this huge event is organized by the four major social and political associations Rosa Liste, Sub, LeTra and Münchner Aids-Hilfe.
Besides fun and festivities, the focus is also very much on the political roots of the CSD. Thus the CSD traditionally begins with the demonstration, which is led by the Mayor, Dieter Reiter, and the Rosa Liste city councillor, Thomas Niederbühl since the year 2000.
Afterwards, the street festival takes place at the Marienplatz, Munich's historic central square. And in the evening, the honorable neo-gothic Munich City Hall opens it's doors and is transformed into an enormous party location for the gay and lesbian community. This is truly unique - worldwide!
Watch out for the CSD-PrideMap. This is a helpful small map with all the gay bars, cafes, restaurants etc. and an overview about the events of the PrideWeek from July 8 – July 16, 2016 (german only). The online version is here for download available.
